GEORGETOWN, THE GHOST CAPITAL

A TV reporter once referred to Georgetown County as the “Ghost Capital of the South.” With over one hundred ghost hauntings in the area, no wonder it earned that title! Why are so many ghosts present in this area? Some say they’re products of strong romances in the antebellum era. Some of the greatest stories of romance come from this time. Many of these romances went wrong—a loved one went off to sea and never returned, leaving a brokenhearted lover alone. Many waited on their lovers until their own deaths. And even after death, many have returned, still waiting for their lovers’ return. Some say it was the sudden and often-violent death associated with seafaring life that produced the ghosts. Many young men lost their lives when they went out to sea. Others say the ghosts were products of loved ones heading off to war only to be killed, leaving grief-stricken lovers behind, or of plantation owners returning after death to watch over their homes and plantations.
